Train 7801
Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6
Chapter 7 Chapter 8

Chapter 1

The dispatcher's office of the underground was in a great panic, for the train 7801, running normally with a full load of passengers, disappeared suddenly from the screen of the detecting system.

"7801, 7801, where are you? Please answer me!" the dispatcher asked in an intense voice.

There was no reply from train 7801.

"Where did the signal of 7801 disappear?" the chief dispatcher asked, on hearing the news.

"Between Pine station and Beta station." the dispatcher pointed out the site to the chief.

"Stop the traffic immediately! Send a repair team between Pine station and Beta station to search for 7801. Prepare the firemen and rescue teams." the chief dispatcher ordered after asking the manager.

It was often ominous if an underground train lost its signal and communication while running. Generally speaking, it must be a fire or a great malfunction.

The line stopped completely. Stations were packed with people that nobody knew what had happened. Complaints were heard continuously. People could waste time at home or work without a limit, but as soon as they got on a vehicle, they would try their best to save time, even a second.

The workmen of the underground were deploying the passengers, in an atmosphere of denouncement.

The repair team divided into two groups, one entered from Pine station and the other entered from Beta station, trying to find train 7801.

To their surprise, when the two groups met each other online, none of them claimed to have seen the train.

"Didn't you find 7801?" the group setting off from Pine St. asked the other.

"No! Didn't you find it?" the group from Beta St. asked them.

"No! That's impossible!"

"Report to the dispatcher's office!"

A team leader reported with a headphone.

"What? There is no train 7801 between Pine St. and Beta St.? Nonsense! Could it fly away? This is underground, the line unable to escape! Search it carefully!" said the chief dispatcher.

"There is really not! A large train, not a needle, how couldn't we see it with so many eyes? If you don't believe, you can search it yourself!" the team leader said.

The chief dispatcher walked from Pine St. to Beta St. himself, fixed still.

Train 7801 was missing!

The chief ordered to fling all the staff to look for 7801 on the railways among all the stations.

The staff nearly stood in a circle on the railway, hand in hand, 7801 not found.

7801 had really got lost, with its driver and a full load of passengers. It was estimated that there were at least 1,000 passengers on board.

The railway was completely enclosed underground. The train running on it could not fly even with wings. How did 7801 get lost?

The Underground Corp. organized an urgent conference with the managers of all departments.

"This is the most troublesome problem we had met since the foundation of our firm. Wherever did 7801 go?" the directing manager asked them.

An underground train got lost with a full load of passengers while running normally, leaving no trails on the railway, it was really unbelievable.

"I felt that we should accept this reality first," said one department manager, "Every of us has walked on the whole lap of railway. It really got lost."

The directing manager looked at him.

"We'd better resume the traffic first, and then report to the city." the manager said.

"If 7801 became hidden, would it cause a crash if we resumed the traffic?" another department manager said.

"Invisible?" the directing manager felt even more curious, as if in a fairy tale.

"Since every odd thing could happen, we had to reconsider it." the manager said.

The directing manager nodded.

"Arrange an empty train to run around the whole lap of railway at the lowest speed, so as to see if there was invisible 7801 on the railway. If not, resume the traffic." another department manager suggested.

The directing manager accepted his suggestion.

Thus, a completely empty train, with only a driver, ran around the whole lap of railway at the speed of 0.5 kph, without any barriers.

It proved that train 7801 did not become hidden.

"Resume the traffic!" the directing manager ordered.

Passengers with great anger rushed into the station.

Chapter 2

The directing manager of the Underground Corp. was sitting outside the mayor's office, waiting to be invited. According to the mayor's secretary said, the mayor was dealing with an affair which was more important than the missing of train.

The directing manager kept looking his watch. He seldom came into the mayor's office.

A bald man came out of the mayor's office, with a disappointed looking.

"You may come in now." the secretary said to the directing manager.

The directing manager entered the office. It was a large, bright room covered with hardwood floor. The risen flag beside the desk indicated the solemnity of the owner of this room.

"Sit down!" said the mayor.

The directing manager could hardly wait to sit down that he began to report the missing of train 7801.

The mayor listened to him, like listening to a myth.

"If I were you, I wouldn't believe it. But it does be true." the directing manager ended his report with this sentence.

"Are you exhausted these days? It seems as if you haven't slept for days. The public transportation of our city mainly depends on you, right? I've heard that the line stopped this morning. The pressure on buses was quite large so they complained. However, we don't have a intention to punish you." the mayor thought the directing manager of the Underground Corp. was coming to look for an excuse.

The directing manager was puzzled.

"Listen to me, sir. I swear with my humanity! One of our trains got lost while running normally. All the 1,000 passengers and the driver on board have not been found so far. Please believe me." the directing manager said in a certain voice.

"If someone told me that a bus got lost, I would believe, even if someone told me that a train got lost, I would believe. But I really can't believe that an underground train got lost, even with a full load of passengers! You cannot convince me!" the mayor looked at his watch.

The directing manager knew that the mayor wanted to get rid of him.

Just at the moment, the telephone on the desk rang.

"Sir, your wife calls, please pick up line 2." said the secretary in the phone.

The mayor picked up another receiver.

"What? What do you say?" the mayor glanced at the directing manager. "I see."

The mayor put down the receiver.

"I beg your pardon?" the mayor said to the directing manager.

The directing manager thought that the mayor now believed in him.

The mayor's wife worked for the Teaching Bureau. In her office there were 3 workers who went to work by underground, but by then none of them had arrived. She called their homes but was told that they had already left. That was to say, they had got lost.

The directing manager repeated what he had just said.

The mayor frowned.

An underground train got lost while running! Together with the 1,000 passengers on board!

The secretary came in and whispered to the mayor.

"Let him in!" said the mayor.

The city police officer entered.

"Sir, there seems to be something wrong. From the midday on, people have been keeping reporting cases to the police stations. The contents are exactly the same: relatives/colleagues got lost. Most of them got beepers but however they are called, they fail to reply." said the officer.

"By now, how many people have got lost." asked the mayor.

"It has been 378 cases so far, and it is still increasing." said the officer.

"Do the cases have anything in common?" asked the mayor.

"All the people got lost took an underground train." the officer took a look at the directing manager.

The mayor was now fully convinced.

"An underground train has got lost. Your caseload will keep increasing, for it is estimated that there were 1,000 passengers on board." the mayor told the officer.

"Was it hijacked by the bandits?" asked the officer.

"It would be better if it were hijacked." the mayor sighed.

"Then it was..." the officer looked at the directing manager.

"Unreasonable disappearance." the directing manager told the officer.

The officer had a very strange expression on his face.

The mayor pressed the bell on the desk.

The secretary came in.

"Tell the heads of Public Bureau, News Bureau and Finance Bureau, together with the directing manager of the Insurance Company to come into my office and hold an emergent meeting, immediately." the mayor asked the secretary.

Those people were summoned in 20 minutes.

"That 7801 got lost must be reported to the citizens in tonight's TV news." the mayor said to the head of News Bureau.

"How to report it? Just say an underground train got lost unreasonably?" the head of News Bureau felt a bit embarrassed.

"What do the journalist do? In common times, they could describe such a little thing as a skyscraper, now we need their help and they've all became mute?" said the mayor, staring at the head of News Bureau.

"I will manage it myself." said the head of News Bureau, wiping his sweat.

"You are in charge of calculating the actual number of the missing. It must be on that train in case someone swindle national assets by change." the mayor said to the officer.

The officer nodded.

"You deal with the following things, do remember to comfort the relatives of the missing." said the mayor to the head of Public Bureau.

"Affirmative." said the head of Public Bureau.

"The government will give every family of the missing 20,000 yuan as a pension. You arrange it." the mayor told the head of Finance Bureau.

The head of Finance Bureau recorded.

"You compensate for who is insured." the mayor said to the directing manager of the Insurance Company.

The directing manager of the Insurance Co. asked the mayor: "Are you sure that they are all dead?"

The mayor looked at the directing manager of the Underground Corp.

"We don't expect they can survive." he said.

"What caused it?" the directing manager of the Insurance Co. asked.

"I think it was hijacked by ETs." the head of Public Bureau was a UFO-fan.

"Report it in this angle." the mayor instructed the head of News Bureau.

The head of News Bureau put it down.

"Do what you should do now." the mayor declared the meeting over.

Chapter 3

The TV news on that evening reported the disappearance of train 7801. Everyone was surprised.

News agencies all over the world diverted it as soon as possible.

The relatives of the missing did not agree, and they came to the government to ask the mayor for an explanation. They didn't believe at all that an underground train had got lost, they even didn't believe that it was hijacked by ETs. They believed that a terrible accident had claimed their kinfolk's lives, and they hated the dishonesty of the local government.

The directing manager of the Underground Corp., consigned by the mayor, explained what had happened to train 7801 in details to the relatives. However, they thought he was telling a lie and they asked him for their kinfolk's lives.

The mayor's assistant, accompanying the directing manager, said to those relatives that the time limit of the payment of pension was a week. The government would not take the responsibility, as it was really unexpected.

Those relatives were intelligent enough to ask for the pension.

1,000 families held a lamenting ceremony for their lost relatives, and the government put the flag down to semi-height.

There were a lot of analyses of the disappearance of train 7801, of which the ET's action was the most acceptable one.

Time passed, everything returned to normal. People gradually forgot train 7801.

Chapter 4

One morning after a year, the dispatchers were watching the running of the underground trains in the dispatcher's office as usual.

"Look! There is an extra train." said one dispatcher.

The staff clearly saw a signal of a train between Pine St. and Beta St. Another train was running normally between these two stations too. The distance between the two trains was so short that there would be probably a collision at anytime.

"Where does it come from?" the chief dispatcher asked them.

Everyone shook his head.

"7805, 7805, please pay attention! There is a train 1,000m ahead of you, slow down at once!" the chief dispatcher ordered the driver of the train running normally.

"7805 acknowledge!"

"Tell all the trains behind to slow down." said the chief dispatcher.

The staff became very busy with the trains.

"Call that extra train." ordered the chief dispatcher.

"What are you? Please answer me!" it was the first time that the dispatcher used such words.

"I am 7801!" the driver of that train answered.

7801?

The dispatcher's office became a mess.

"7801? Are you sure?" the dispatcher asked the driver.

"What do you mean by 'Are you sure'? What's up?" the driver said.

"So you've come back?" the dispatcher was puzzled.

"What do you mean by 'come back'? Where did I go?" the driver was surprised.

"......" The dispatcher had nothing to reply.

"7801, is it really you?" the chief dispatcher picked up the headphone.

"What's wrong with you all today? We have just connected 5 minutes before!"

"We connected 5 minutes ago?" the chief dispatcher fixed his eyes upon the screen.

"You are the chief dispatcher, aren't you? We together had breakfast in the dining-hall this morning." said the driver of 7801.

The chief dispatcher had his breakfast at home this morning.

"Does he talk about the day that 7801 got lost?" a careful dispatcher reminded.

Right! The chief dispatcher recalled. Exactly on the day that 7801 had got lost, he had breakfast with the driver of it in the dining-hall of the corporation. It impressed him a lot because of the disappearance of 7801.

Train 7801 did not know that it had been missing for a year.

"7801, what is the date today?" the chief dispatcher asked when he saw the calendar showing 14/7/2014.

"Are you treating me like a child in kindergarten? Of course today is 14/7/2013!" the driver said.

7801 really failed to know that it had been missing for a year.

"Telephone the directing manager at once!" said the chief dispatcher to the staff.

The directing manager immediately announced the mayor.

"Don't let those passengers on board get off!" the mayor instructed the directing manager.

"Why? They are entering the station." said the directing manager.

"Their disappearance is too incredible. Where did they go? Did they have special illnesses on their bodies? Are they the commandos trained by the ETs to attack us?" the mayor did considered thoughtfully.

"But they are entering the station! What shall we do then?" the directing manager asked the mayor.

"Send the police to the platform of Beta St., and get two drivers to go on board and drive train 7801 to a consigned station, which has been cleared in advance, and don't make 7801 to open its door until I fling armed policemen and armies there." said the mayor.

The directing manager instantly executed the command.

The driver found with a start that the platform was filled with policemen when he drove train 7801 into Beta St.

Two drivers jumped into the driving room even before the train stopped steadily.

"Don't open the door." said the two drivers to their long lost colleague.

"Why do you wear respirators?" the driver of 7801 asked them when he saw they were both wearing respirators.

In fact they wore respirators in case the epidemic infected.

"Why can't we open the door." asked the driver of 7801.

"Superior's instruction. Maybe there are criminals on board." said a colleague.

"Why are you so fat only after one day?" the driver of 7801 asked another colleague beside him.

"Not one day, but one year!" the colleague said.

"One year?" the driver of 7801 felt unbelievable.

"Everything is ready for restarting." the drivers wearing respirators reported to the directing manager by the headphone aboard.

Chapter 5

Eric was a judge of a middle court. In the morning he went to work by underground. He took along a magazine as usual, to read it while the train was running. He felt curiously that he had a very good efficiency while reading in vehicles.

When the train departed Pine St., Eric took away his magazine, for he knew the next station would be Beta St., where he should get off.

Eric came near the door and the train began to slow down. Suddenly the darkness outside the windows turned to brightness. It reached Beta St.

Eric was surprised when he saw the platform was nearly full of policemen.

He judged that there was an accident to this station.

When the train stopped steadily, the door kept shut.

"Open the door!" those passengers who wanted to get off shouted.

Every door was guarded by some policemen.

"Open the door!" the passengers knocked at the windows.

The policemen asked the passengers not to knock at the windows by gestures.

Eric felt something wrong, for he noticed with a shock that a marble ad nearby had such words as this: Visa Advertisement Inc Design 2014.

2014?

Eric knew that this year was 2013.

Misprint?

Eric had hardly time to think over when the train started again.

"I want to get off!"

"Open the door!"

Scores of passengers scolded.

The train took the curse nothing at all and accelerated.

It even didn't stop at the next station.

Eric was famous for acuteness in the court, for he could deal with a difficult case correctly and freely. However, he was not acute enough to judge what had happened.

The train had already passed 7 stations, without any stop.

All the passengers sitting stood up and looked outside the windows. It blinks from bright to dark, passing the stations frequently.

"Wherever is the train pulling us to?" one passenger screamed.

The train was hijacked? Eric had such an idea suddenly.

The kidnappers had ever hijacked planes, ships and buses, but Eric was never told that they would hijack an underground train.

Eric began to seek for those passengers who wore police uniforms, intending to organize a self-rescue.

The train began to slow down.

"May I have your attention please?" Eric said to the passengers in the same compartment, "There seems to be some trouble with our train, but we can't hurry. Are there any policemen or soldiers? I am a judge. Please listen to me if you trust me."

"I am a policeman."

"I am a soldier."

"I am a safeguard."

3 people registered to Eric.

All the passengers in the compartment agreed to listen to Eric.

"Whatever has happened?" the passengers asked Eric.

"It might be some kidnappers have hijacked the train we are taking." Eric said.

Some female passengers were frightened to tears.

The train entered a station, and stopped.

The platform was filled with armed soldiers and policemen, whose guns all pointed at the train. All the staff were wearing gas masks.

Eric found it not been hijacked, but even worse.

"Passengers on train 7801 pay attention! Passengers on 7801 pay attention!" a sheriff, looking like a pig with a gas mask, shouted at the passengers on board with a microphone.

Eric then realized the serial number of the train he took was 7801.

All the passengers held their breaths to listen to the sheriff.

"You, all of you, must obey our directions and never act thoughtlessly. Any consequences caused by your thoughtless action will be in the charge of you. Every soldier of us is authorized to fire at you." the sheriff said, "I repeat! You, all of you, must obey our directions and never act thoughtlessly. Any consequences caused by your thoughtless action will be in the charge of you! Every soldier of us is authorized to fire at you!"

All the passengers stood still.

"Now, you leave the compartment, one after one, put your hands on your head, and accept the body search.

The door of the compartment where Eric stayed opened first.

Eric was just leaving the compartment when a soldier outside asked him to put his hands on his head.

As a judge, Eric felt it an insult. He refused to do so.

The soldier put up his gun, pointing at Eric's head.

Eric had to put his hands on his head.

Two soldiers came to search Eric's body.

"It is illegal for you to do so! Why?" Eric shouted at the sheriff.

"Why? Because the train you are taking has been missing for one year, but it comes back so suddenly that the government can't take it easy! Please excuse me for doing this for the city security." the sheriff said to the passengers.

Being missing for one year? All the passengers confirmed that there'd be something wrong with the sheriff's brain. Everyone had just left home one hour before, what did he mean by "one year"?

Eric remembered the ad at Beta St.

Was it real that train 7801 spent one year running from Pine St. to Beta St.? But why were the passengers unaware of it? After Eric was searched, he walked outside the station in the direction pointed by the soldiers, followed by the passengers who were searched.

"Bump!" a gun fired.

A passenger attempted to resist and was hit by a bullet.

Nobody dared to resist again.

Eric felt discomfited.

Chapter 6

Outside the station parked 20 large prisoner's vans, each of which with iron bars standing for ruthless laws.

Passengers of train 7801 walked on the prisoner's van one by one, supervised by thousands of armed soldiers.

Eric noticed that there was an extra building beside the underground station. When he was here yesterday, he didn't see it.

A man sitting beside Eric whispered to him: "I have a mobile phone."

Eric nodded, making gestures to express his need.

The man passed the mobile phone to Eric.

Eric allocated the number of the court he worked for.

"Sorry, the number you are dialing was changed 6 months ago, please dial 114 for details." a dainty girl's voice was heard in the receiver.

Eric really felt it complicated. Did it really pass one year? But why none of the passengers felt that? Was it real that there were two different times existing on the earth? Did we enter the other time domain underground?

The vehicle group drove outside the urban area, guarded by police cars.

"Where are we going?" the man asked Eric quietly.

Eric shook his head.

Landscape outside gave a great astonishment to the passengers of 7801, for several overpasses appeared where there was nothing yesterday, and strange architectures could be seen everywhere.

The vehicle group entered a hotel situated in the outskirts, surrounded by tanks and with ceasing helicopters upwards.

All the passengers were concentrated on the ground in front of the hotel, surrounded by armed soldiers. An official with a gas mask appeared in front of them.

"I am the mayor assistant." he said.

"I've got something to say!" Eric interrupted him, "I am the judge of the city court, and this is my ID card.

Eric showed his ID card to the mayor assistant.

The mayor assistant checked his card, with his hands covered by gloves.

Eric wanted to prove his remarks with his identification.

"You say." said the mayor assistant.

"I swear with my humanity, none of us had an experience that we spent one year in this train. We really did leave home this morning!" Eric said.

"This is absolutely impossible!" the mayor assistant did not believe at all, "Train 7801, the one you took, got lost last year, that was the news noticed by all over the world! It was one of the ten pieces of greatest news in 2013. You must have gone to some place. Before the fact was uncovered, you must live in this hotel. We must be responsible for all the citizens and all the people in the world. We also need to have your bodies examined thoroughly in case you bring a new kind of virus to the earth."

"We didn't leave the train at all! Where could we go? I am the national labor model that you must trust me." a middle-aged woman said to the mayor assistant.

"I am a senator! You have no authority to restrain me!"

"I am a professor! I protest!"

......

Everyone with decent jobs protested.

"You should consider more about the security of our city. I believe all of you have a judgement, and you must have felt something changed on the way here, which can only be realized by the time. Besides, would we seize you with armies unreasonably? Or the mayor has got a puma's bravery? I hope you will calm down. You will receive the best treatment here. In every room we have a telephone, and you can communicate with your relatives. Whether this year is 2014 or not, you can make sure after calling your homes. However I remind you, please don't speak so hurriedly while calling your homes, as they have already held a lamenting ceremony for you a year before. After the fact is given, you can go back to your home. At that time, even if you don't want to go, the taxpayers will not agree." said the mayor assistant.

Passengers of train 7801 had nothing else to say.

"I say it again, everyone who tries to escape from this hotel may lead to death, including national labor model, senator and judge." the mayor assistant announced, "You may keep in touch with outside through telephone, and you may watch television and read newspapers, but you may not write letters."

Passengers were distributed to separate rooms.

Eric called his home as soon as entering his room.

"Who is that asking for?" a strange man answered the telephone.

"Who is that?" Eric asked.

"This is the host here." the man was obviously dissatisfied by Eric's question.

"The host? And your wife?" Eric thought that he had dialed the wrong number.

"My wife is Dora." the man said.

Dora was just Eric's wife!

His wife remarried?

Eric was fixed, holding the receiver.

"Hey, speaking! Who are you asking for?" Dora's new husband shouted.

Eric dropped the receiver.

Doctors and nurses, wearing rubber uniforms and gas masks, broke into Eric's room to give him a physical examination. The nurse inserted the injector into Eric's arm, pulled out a large test-tube of blood. This made Eric think of the veterinarians.

Chapter 7

The mayor listened to the assistant's report on dealing with train 7801 sternly.

"What? They didn't admit to have been to some place?" the mayor was surprised.

"There is a judge and a senator among the passengers, and they both confirmed that they left home just this morning. It seemed true." said the mayor assistant.

"It is impossible! It is known all over the world that train 7801 has been missing for one year. Where were they staying during the year?" the mayor said.

"Were their brains emptied by the ETs, or they had been changed into bio-robots by the ETs?" a vice-mayor said.

"However, they can never be set free until the fact is given. I must be in charge of the human beings." the mayor said.

"Is the medium reporting on the return of train 7801?" the head of News Bureau asked the mayor.

"Of course. Tell them why are we seizing their relatives, they will understand."

All the journals reported on the miraculous return of train 7801, which got lost last year, and the passengers' refusing on spending one year aboard.

Anybody in the world wouldn't have believed, if they hadn't seen it on TV by themselves.

Dora saw her ex-husband Eric on TV, unknowing how to face this reality. Her new husband was very kind to her, even better than her former one. However, Eric left an unforgettable impression deep in her heart.

Quantities of remarried families fell into trouble.

It was a great surprise that none of the relatives asked to set them free, for everyone were afraid of ETs' employees, of living together with robots, of diseases.

Nevertheless, those who passed one year but refused to admit must be abnormal.

Journalists all over the world rushed towards the hotel restraining the passengers, and so did the scientists.

The physical examination indicated that there was nothing wrong with the passengers' consciousness or health.

No passenger so far admitted that he had missed one year, or left the underground to another place.

But train 7801 really had been missing for one year.

Wherever did they go?

All the scientists thought of it hard. Every steel panel of train 7801 was examined carefully. Every passenger had talked for over 10 hours with an illustrious scientist.

It was still a mystery.

Was it real that there were two times existing on the earth? Had train 7801 entered another time domain by mistake?

No one believed the suggestion put forward by Eric.

Then wherever did train 7801 go during this year?

7801 became the most familiar number to the human beings.

Chapter 8

Time passed by, and the passengers restrained in the hotel protested.

They elected Eric telephoning the UN Secretary, asking him to free the passengers of train 7801.

"We are not wrong! We want freedom!" Eric used these two sentences to end his talk with the UN Secretary.

From the angle of humanity, the UN Secretary claimed to free the passengers.

Many countries detested as they worried that it would bring disasters to the earth.

The International Humanity Organization supported to free the passengers.

The mayor collected ideas from different aspects, of which half agreed and half objected.

Those who objected thought that these people would do harm to society if they were freed, and those who agreed thought that it would be immoral to keep on seizing them after having confirmed no virus existing through the physical examination.

The mayor thought again and again, finally decided to free the passengers.

When Eric told this news to his companions, everyone broke into cheers, for they had been kept in this hotel for totally 5 months.

However, after Eric returned to the city, he found nowhere to go. He was unwilling to disturb the new life of his wife, Dora. His colleagues dared not to shake hands with him again when he arrived at the court for work. He took charge of a case but was refused when the prosecutor and the defendant found him to be responsible for it.

A middle-schoolboy returned school and his classmates looked him over, as if looking at a monkey. Afterwards, 4/5 of them were transferred to other school, as their parents worried about their safety.

A head of a department wanted to continue to be the head after returning to his original office. The new head told him that he should have retired and he plead to have a year left. The new one told him that year had been consumed himself in the underground, it was 2014!

A university schoolgirl went for a job after returning, but as soon as she was known to be the passenger on train 7801, she was rejected firmly, for the employers were afraid of economic spy.

Nobody was willing to contact those who missed one year.

Finally they discovered that society did not accept them any more.

They had to gather together and build their homestead at the foot of a mountain, marrying each other and reproducing their offspring.

At the end of the 22nd century, they were the most microscopic minority in the world. About the derivation of this nationality, few people knew.

Chapter 1

Stopper had been a dove-feeding fan since 7, and kept this hobby when he was already 40. Stopper's dad was a policeman of the local city with great achievements. After he had his son, he determined to make him another policeman, and particularly named him "Stopper", which stood for stopping the crimes. As it was, Stopper became quite a good policeman when he was 23.

Stopper's doves lived in the balcony of his house. He always got up at 5:00 to clean the dove cage, using a small spade to remove the muck. He found it great fun.

Dad ever thought of his hobby indecent, but he changed his mind after having seen Stopper's friends who also liked feeding doves included some virtuous people. Stopper told his dad that Sun Yat-sen liked feeding doves, so did Michael Taison, etc.

The most exciting event for a dove-feeder must be sending doves to flying contest. Sending such a well-fed dove to the contest is just like sending a child to the war, unknowing its destine. Therefore, many doves never return. The thing that made Stopper discouraged was that his doves had taken part in many flying contests but had never won even once. The best result was the 5th place of a 300km race. Stopper wanted his doves to be champions, even in his dreams.

If, Stopper got a name and address belonging to the owner of a champion dove, he would communicate with him at once and buy the offspring of the dove. Once, Stopper spent 8,000 yuan buying 3 eggs of a champion dove from a famous dove-feeder called Charlie. After the little doves were born, Stopper tried his best to look after them and they all seemed to be future champions. However, all the 3 doves acted ordinarily in the flying contests, for they had a long time to return. His daughter said: "Riches limit in three generations." and his wife added: "Great men's son seldom does well." He felt discomfited.

"You have been feeding doves for over 30 years. Anyway, you should have won the contest once." Stopper's wife said to him, "you have changed the balcony into the dove cage, and our house is never well ventilated. We cannot sacrifice for nothing. Winning a championship, you can sell eggs, too. An egg of a champion dove must cost 800 or more."

Stopper felt it unimportant to sell eggs. In his opinion, winning the contest was of great importance. National Dove Association would hold an 8,000km race this year, whose distance was unprecedented. The bonus for the champion would be 1,000,000 yuan. Stopper dreamt to win the championship of the 8,000km race, but he knew it was a daydream. Many expert dove-feeders would attend the race and he scarcely had an opportunity to win. Besides, the experts expected that in the 8,000km race, it would be a miracle if 1 dove out of 10,000 managed to return. There had already been several animal protecting organizations protesting that holding such a distant flying contest was abusing the animals.

This morning, after cleaning the dove cage, Stopper took a newspaper to pack the muck. Before he threw it away, he noticed a title on the newspaper saying: A Scientist Applying for a Patent of Human-animal Mixture.

Stopper stood at the litterbin and read the news. It read: "A scientist called Sam succeeded in mixing the human embryos with the animal embryos, and developed a Human-animal Mixture. His development was deplored by sociologists. However, a large number of scientists considered it extraordinary. Now Sam's application for the patent is accepted by National Patent Bureau."

Stopper threw the muck into the litterbin, taking the newspaper back.

Stopper read that news in the staircase again and again until his wife shouted at him in the balcony: "So you wanna stop working? Have breakfast!"

"Okay, I will come." Replied Stopper, putting the newspaper into his pocket.

While having breakfast, Stopper's wife found him absent-minded.

"Do you have something troublesome?" She asked.

Stopper is considering the news and he denied: "Nothing much, why?

His wife urged him: "Eat faster, or you will be punished by the officer."

He ate a loaf of bread with some milk, and told his wife: "I'll be on duty today overnight, so clean the cage for me next morning."

His wife complained: "I have cleaned the cage for you many times, but I received nothing. All the other dove-feeders get money from it, but you don't."

Before leaving, Stopper told his wife: "I will attempt to win the 8,000km race this time, and I will give you at least 100,000 yuan of the bonus as a reward."

His wife laughed: "Thank goodness! 8,000km! It would be my pleasure if you won the 3rd place of the 50km race!"

Stopper rode to the police. The officer told him that it was of great safety these days, so that they could have a rest, as there was often a storm after a long silence.

Dialing 114, Stopper got the telephone number of Sam.

After allocated the number, he said:

"May I speak to Sam please?"

"Speaking."

"I am Stopper, a policeman."

"Policeman? What's the matter?"

"A private business, and I wanna have a face-to-face talk with you, as it is very important for me, maybe beneficial for your career, too."

"So you come here right now, will you?"

"Sorry, I am on duty at present. What about 7pm tomorrow?"

"Okay, 7pm tomorrow."

"Thanks a lot."

The next day after work, Stopper arrived at Sam's lab.

He directly said: "I think that your Human-animal Mixture is very good."

Sam was pleased, for he said: "The policeman agreed it and I'll be confident."

Stopper said: "I need your help."

Sam replied: "Just say it."

Stopper said: "I have fed doves for over 30 years and I devoted all my space-time to it, but I haven't won the flying contest even once."

Sam sighed: "It does be unlucky, I used to feed doves when I was young, too."

Stopper asked: "So you can understand me. Will you develop a Human-animal-mixed dove with my embryos and my doves' embryos for the 8,000km race?"

Sam was thrilled and he asked: "Your idea is very exciting, but is it cheating?"

Stopper answered: "I have thought of it and I don't think so. An H-a-mixed dove still has a dove's shape, but with human consciousness. It won't be cheating if it looks like a dove."

Sam nodded, and said: "What about your health?"

Stopper replied: "Fairly good, I've ever got the 5th place of the Wushu contest."

Sam asked: "I have to collect embryos from the best dove, do you have one?"

Stopper said: "I can buy one from Charlie, the most famous person among local dove-feeders, for his doves often get all the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place of a flying contest."

After considering for a moment, Sam agreed.

Stopper said: "Thanks very much, and how much shall I pay you?"

Sam answered: "Nothing. Although I succeed it in theory, but I haven't practised it yet. I should thank you for providing me this chance to fulfil it."

Stopper said: "Whether your experiment can succeed or not depends on economy and society, not the person giving you the chance."

Stopper felt Sam an honest person and he would like to communicate with this kind. Then he asked: "When shall we begin?"

Sam smiled: "We will begin as soon as you buy the best dove. It won't make you miss the 8,000km race."

Chapter 2

The officer shouted in the aisle: "There's a case."

Stopper and his colleagues ran for pistols. For them, "there's a case" was an order of sortie.

Armed with an anti-ammo vest, a steel cap and a pistol, Stopper got on the car.

The officer told them that a bank robbery happened. The bandits killed all the assistants and the safeguards, left in a car with a large amount of money.

The officer reminded them to keep safe, for if the bandits refused to be arrested, kill them.

The radio aboard rang.

"Pay attention! Object spotted! The bandits are on a grey Volkswagen, driving from south to north down Liberty Road! Over!"

The officer directed his driver to drive into Liberty Road.

Stopper had a very good sight, for he could discern his own dove among hundreds of doves flying together. Thus he pointed forward and said: "There!"

Ahead of several cars was the grey Volkswagen, which seemed to be the bandits'.

The officer commanded: "Stop it!"

The driver overtook the cars ahead, and he stopped the police car in front of Volkswagen. The Volkswagen failed to brake and it crashed into the police car.

A sort of bullets was shot from the Volkswagen, and the driver was wounded.

Stopper alit, squatting down and firing at the bandits. The passers-by screamed.

Some bandits with veils on their face abandoned their car, firing and escaping. Stopper aimed at the head of one and fired. That fellow fell.

He realized that he should leave a living, so he fired at one bandit's leg. That one sat down and failed to move.

Stopper went forward, removing his gun, and put him into a pair of handcuffs.

Only within 10 minutes, 3 bandits out of 4 were killed, with the other hurt.

To the officer's surprise, they failed to find any money at the scene.

The officer asked the wounded bandit: "Where's the money?"

That fellow refused to answer at first, but when he was threatened to be killed, he said: "Philip got off with the money and asked us to drive on so as to mislead you."

The officer asked: "Who is Philip and where did he get off?"

"Philip is our leader and he got off at the entrance to Liberty Road." said him.

The officer picked up the headphone and reported it to the station.

The police station flung all the staff but failed to catch Philip that day. The officer printed Philip's portrait and distributed them to every policeman in the city. Stopper remembered Philip's appearance. The minister sent them to every policeman in the country.

Chapter 3

The next evening, Stopper rushed to meet Charlie in the southern suburbs, where they had appointed.

He told Charlie: "I wanna buy your best dove."

Charlie said: "That will be Skinner."

Stopper knew that Skinner was the champion of the 1,000km race held this year, and he said: "Let me have a look."

Charlie led Stopper into a beautifully decorated dove cage. He took a black dove out of a nest and showed it to Stopper. Stopper watched its eyes and head carefully and he praised silently: "It is absolutely the best."

Stopper asked: "How much are its offspring?"

Charlie said: "30,000 for each little dove and 10,000 for each egg. However, as we are good friends, you can only pay 10,000 for a dove and 6,000 for an egg."

Stopper said: "I want a dove. I will give you the money in 3 days."

Charlie replied generously: "It doesn't matter, take it along."

Stopper watched the little dove again and again, and promised: "Alright, I will take it along first, and I will send you the money before the day after tomorrow."

Charlie asked: "So you want to join the 8,000km race, yeah?"

Stopper said: "I'm too unlucky to win the 500km race. You are much luckier."

Charlie advised him: "Don't send too many, I suppose none of them could return. Winning 1,000,000 yuan isn't easy."

Stopper asked: "How many doves will you send then?"

"One," said Charlie, "and you?"

"8,000km is really too far, I will also send one, at most."

Chapter 4

Leaving Charlie's house, Stopper went to Sam's lab directly.

Sam knew a little about doves. As soon as he saw Jr. Skinner, he found it an extraordinary dove.

Sam absorbed some embryos from both Jr. Skinner and Stopper. Then he told Stopper to go back and wait for reply.

Stopper worried if it would take him a long time, so he asked about the time.

"A month approximately. You can still regret now. Otherwise, a duplication of you will appear on the earth in a month."

Stopper answered firmly: "I don't regret."

Chapter 5

Stopper's wife was greatly irritated when she knew his husband had spent 10,000 yuan buying a little dove. She complained loudly to him: "If you hadn't fed doves, our life would have been much better than it is now. And you even spent such a large amount of money on a 'Skinner', where can I gather the money for you?"

Stopper had great difficulty persuading his wife to give him the money, and he promised to return her 1,000,000 yuan.

"How can you manage to win the 8,000km race?" His wife was fully puzzled.

"I have a secret weapon?" Stopper said.

"Secret weapon? You want to cheat?" Asked his wife.

"Cheating... How can I explain it to you."

In fact, if Stopper now returned Jr. Skinner to Charlie, he wouldn't have to pay for it, as it was of no use, for Sam had already collected its embryos. However, Stopper was too innocent to deceive his best friend.

The next day, Stopper sent Charlie 10,000 yuan, given by his wife.

Chapter 6

This month, Stopper lived rather miserably. Not only had he been on duty overnight frequently, but he always received commands when he was at home. Stopper swore that he would force Philip to stop sleeping for a fortnight if he caught that guy.

The other evening, the telephone rang just as Stopper went to bed.

"Get Philip posted!" Stopper murmured, while picking the receiver.

"This is Sam; is that Stopper?"

"Hello, Sam! This is Stopper."

"I succeeded, will you come then?"

"I will go as soon as possible!"

Stopper got up at once, when his wife asked: "Found Philip again?"

"No," Stopper denied, "a friend want to give me a dove and I'm going to fetch it. Please call me if the officer telephones."

Stopper went to Sam's lab, and he saw his H-a-mixed dove on the desk at first sight.

Sam asked: "Does it look like you?"

Stopper watched it carefully, and said: "No."

Sam explained: "When I was developing it, I put the tendency of dove's embryos to feature, and yours to intelligence. If I had done it oppositely, it would have been against your requirement."

The dove suddenly began to speak: "Hello, Stopper! Please give me a name."

Stopper shivered with a start.

Sam said: "It can speak, with the same intelligence as yours."

Stopper thought for a moment and said: "Mix my name and Skinner's name together, and I will call you 'Skipper'."

Skipper said: "It's quite a good name, thanks!"

Sam reminded Stopper that his memory also existed in Skipper's brain.

Stopper nodded and asked Skipper if he was confident to win the 8,000km race.

Skipper said: "If I couldn't win, none of other doves could. However, 8,000km was really cruel. I estimate that the reason they hold such a race is that they feel no doves could return."

Although Sam told Stopper before, he was still amazed by Skipper's words, similar to an expert dove-feeder.

Sam said to Stopper: "You can take him back now. Attending such a distant race, you need to train him."

Stopper warned Skipper not to speak in front of other person except him, including his wife and daughter.

Skipper obviously understood, for he said: "I know. Don't worry about that."

Sam said to Stopper: "Skipper needs no cage. He will never fly away."

Stopper and Skipper said goodbye to Sam.

After leaving Sam's lab, Stopper rode home, and Skipper stood on the handlebars.

Stopper asked: "You can speak dove's language, cannot you?"

Skipper said: "Sure. I can speak two languages. I'd like to act as a translator between you and your doves."

Stopper said: "So you know everything about me?"

Skipper told him: "I know everything from your birth to the moment that Sam absorbed embryos from you."

Stopper sighed with amazement: "We don't have secrets, so."

Skipper said: "That sounds interesting."

At that moment, Stopper's beeper rang.

Stopper shouted: "The officer asked me to go to the police station at once."

"Philip is still at large?" Asked Skipper.

"You really know everything," replied Stopper, "Philip is so cunning that he has made fun of us for nearly a month. Let me send you home first, and I'll go."

"No, you needn't. I can manage it myself. Hurry up for catching Philip!"

Stopper got a surprise: "You can fly at night as well?"

Skipper said: "You can go out at night, why can't I do so?"

With these words, Skipper took off, flying round above Stopper, and headed for his house.

After being fixed there for a short while, Stopper rode fast towards the station.

Chapter 7

Skipper flew into Stopper's dove cage, which he was very familiar with. However, it was his first time to enter it as a dove.

The doves were surprised to see such an unexpected guest at night.

An experienced dove warned Skipper: "Who are you? What do you want to do? Our owner is a policeman."

Skipper replied: "I am your owner."

The dove said: "Nonsense! Our owner is a human, but you are a dove -- even without an anklet."

Proudly, Skipper said: "As soon as Stopper returns, he will dress me an anklet."

Jr. Skinner said: "You're newly bought, how did you manage to fly back?"

Skipper explained: "We have a special relationship, I, and my owner."

The doves could not understand what he said.

Jr. Skinner asked again: "Can you fly at night?"

Skipper answered: "I can see however dark it is."

...

Stopper's wife heard the doves "cooing" and she complained: "Don't coo, or the neighbour will blame me tomorrow."

Skipper had to whisper to the other doves instead.

Chapter 8

The 8,000km race came near. Stopper tried his best to train Skipper. Now, it seemed as if playing that Skipper flew back from 1,000km away. No matter he was settling, searching for food, or avoiding attack, Skipper could manage easily, with high IQ.

One weekend, Stopper sent Skipper 2,000km away from home by train. When Stopper hurried home, he found Skipper already back.

Stopper said to Skipper: "You're so great! Tell me your experience."

Skipper then told his experience while returning to Stopper and made him fixed. Although Stopper had fed doves for so many years, he knew nothing about the experience of a dove while returning to the nest.

Stopper said with great sense: "It is too great and too tragic that a dove returns home from thousands of kilometres away. The human cruelly sends such a small animal to so distant a place and let it fly back desperately. His/her heart may be made of stone."

Skipper said: "The dove has only one belief: return. In fact, temptations outside are of great number. But for a dove, there's no better place than his own home."

Stopper's wife came back from outside and asked him: "Who are you talking with?"

Stopper replied: "I am murmuring."

His wife was puzzled: "I did hear you talking with someone at the doorway."

Pointing at Skipper on his hands, Stopper said: "Nobody, except him and me."

His wife had already felt Skipper extraordinary, then she asked if he spent a lot of money on it. He told her that it was given by a friend of him.

The 8,000km race, which was in the limelight all the time, was about to begin. This evening, Stopper sent Skipper to register at the association. It was so packed there that nearly all the dove-feeders sent their best doves to take part in the contest. There were many kinds of cages on bicycles, tricycles, cars and motorcycles.

Stopper whispered to Skipper: "I regret to send you here."

Skipper said confidently: "Take it easy, I'm sure to return."

Stopper advised: "Be careful, don't fly too much."

Skipper said to him: "I won't."

Charlie saw them and came on to greet. He gazed at Skipper.

"Is this Jr. Skinner I sold you?" Asked him.

"Yes!"

"How did you feed it? It changed a lot. Perhaps it'll be the champion."

"Thanks for your good words."

Stopper handed his dove in to the workmen of the association. The workmen recorded Skipper's anklet, with also Stopper's licence of the Dove Association. And then he printed inside Skipper's wings. And at last he started the clock.

Afterwards, Skipper was put into an enormous cage, which contained hundreds of doves.

Stopper searched the cage for Skipper in the dim light, not found.

Charlie, whose dove was also put in, said to Stopper: "What a pity! I think I threw it away for nothing."

Stopper said: "I wish it returned."

Chapter 9

With all the other doves together, Skipper was sent to the airport and took a large transporting plane to the starting line 8,000km away.

At the moment, Skipper realized the pain as a competitor. Doves squeezed in the packed cage, with no water or food supply. Everyone was painted with other's muck. As they knew, they used to be treated like treasure at home, but they were now like slaves.

One dove beside Skipper said: "I attended a lot of contests. Mainly I took a truck to the starting line, or took a train at the most luxurious time. Taking a plane is really my first time."

Another dove said: "8,000km! Tired to death! I'll refuse to move as soon as it starts."

Someone asked: "Then where will you go?"

That one said: "I'll look for a wife there, create a family and live on."

Someone said: "I have to return, I am laying eggs."

One dove sighed with reluctance: "The humans are so cruel that they benefit themselves from the urgent feeling of those female doves who are laying eggs."

"So, my owner even feeds me with thriller."

...

Skipper closed his eyes and rested.

Suddenly, a female dove screamed. Skipper opened his eyes and found a strong male dove wanted to rape that fairly beautiful female dove, who refused.

Another male dove went forward to stop the strong one.

"You cannot bully her!"

"Why?" The strong asked.

"She is reluctant." The male dove said.

"It is none of your business. Is she your wife? Even if she were your wife, she would be mine as I like."

With these words, the strong made indecent gestures to the female dove. The female one cried. The male one charged at the strong one, and was injured badly in his left eye, bleeding.

The strong one laughed: "Who still dare to do so? Ha ha!"

Absolute silence.

After a grimace, the strong one jumped upon the female one, as if nobody around. The female one looked at the doves beside hopelessly, with tears in her eyes.

Seeing this scene, Skipper had a strong feeling that he had to save the female dove, no matter what would happen to him, so he squeezed through and shouted at the strong one: "Come down, at once!"

"Are you looking for death?" The strong one cursed.

"You are looking for death, I suppose." Skipper said. "To tell you the truth, I am a policeman, who has ever won the 5th place of the Wushu contest."

The strong one laughed: "You are a policeman? Even if you are a policeman, can you rule the doves? We have no laws here, who is the winner, who is the king."

"You can't disobey the female dove's idea to do what you want, despite no laws."

"I shall do what I want, and I will see if you can prosecute me."

As soon as this sentence, the strong dove began to rape the female one. Skipper charged at him to pull him off. The strong one fought against Skipper. Feathers scattered. The group of doves stepped aside to give them a place for fighting.

The strong dove bit Skipper's neck and refused to loosen. Skipper used his wings instead of fists to hit the strong one's head and kicked his leg with paws. Skipper's blood flew along his neck, but the strong one still refused to loosen. Therefore, Skipper threw him away and bit his beak tightly. Soon afterwards, the strong was out of breath and lost.

Skipper loosened his beak, and said: "Do you submit?"

"I submit."

"Dare you bully the female dove again?"

"I dare not."

The doves praised Skipper continuously. That beautiful female dove who was saved approached Skipper, saying: "Thank you."

"You're welcome." Skipper replied.

"My name is Janet, and you?"

"I have two names, one is Skinner and one is Skipper."

Janet said: "Skinner seems of no sense. I prefer Skipper."

Skipper became fond of Janet, for she liked his name. They talked all the way.

Janet said: "I wanna fly together with you."

Skipper said: "Okay."

The strong watched them not far away, rather jealously. He felt that it was himself who helped Skipper to become the prince. If Skipper had done badly at first, he himself might have become the prince instead and won Janet's love.

Chapter 10

The plane landed. The enormous cages were transported far away from the airport by trucks. The video cameras which were already prepared aimed at the doves. The workmen opened the gate of the cages. Doves rushed out and flew up the sky. Suddenly the sky was crowded. The doves flew a few circles above to find the right direction, and they all made for their homes, competing.

Skipper and Janet flew together. While flying with so many doves, Skipper felt shaken grandly.

Flying, Janet said to Skipper: "As a dove, I don't regret as I attended such a distant race."

Looking at the ground, Skipper answered: "I wanna be the first of this contest."

Janet said: "I wanna be the second."

Skipper replied: "Certainly."

Suddenly Skipper saw a fire blinking in the forest ahead of them. He shouted to his companions: "Turn round! There is a gun!"

Shouting this he led Janet right to avoid attack.

The gun fired. A number of doves dropped.

Janet was grateful to Skipper, she said: "Thanks for saving me once more. How can I repay you?"

Skipper answered: "To be the second."

After 6hrs' continual flight, most of the doves failed to fly further, they touched down to search for food. Skipper and Janet flew on. The doves beside them became less and less.

Skipper felt hungry and exhausted. He looked around and could only find Janet beside.

Janet said weakly: "I can't fly on, because I'm hungry and thirsty."

Skipper said: "Me too, let's land."

Skipper retarded, and observed the ground. He found beneath a city, with heavy traffic and tall buildings. He said:

"It's unsafe to land here, the city isn't big, can you persist on to the suburbs?"

Janet said: "I'll try my best."

Skipper and Janet held out to fly over the city. Janet's height decreased involuntarily, for she was really exhausted.

Skipper found a river. He told Janet: "Follow me."

Skipper landed on a quiet place which he could reach water. And so did Janet later. They drank water thirstily, enjoying every mouthful.

Skipper drank enough, exclaiming: "Very delicious."

Janet said: "I am even hungrier after drinking."

Skipper asked Janet: "What do you want to eat?"

Janet answered: "I cannot choose and I will eat anything eatable."

Skipper told Janet to wait for him. Then he scraped the ground in search of food. Seeing some thrown bread at the bank, he returned to call Janet.

"You found something delicious, didn't you?" Asked Janet.

"Perhaps it is bread thrown by travellers, sufficient for both of us."

Skipper led her there, eating that bread.

While eating, Skipper gazed at Janet. He found her so beautiful that he felt that he ought to tell her his identity. So he said: "I am a Human-dove Mixture."

Janet said: "If you are, I am too. You want to earn 1,000,000 for your owner?"

Skipper said: "Yes, but not complete. My owner has fed doves so long but he hasn't won a championship even once. He wants to be illustrious."

Janet advised him: "If you become the champion, your owner will never lead a simple life. Don't you find it a harmful retribution?"

Fixing his eyes upon Janet, Skipper asked: "What do you mean?"

Janet looked at Skipper lovingly and said: "In fact you know, 8,000km, we cannot fly back at all! I, er, I mean, er, we should abandon such a useless flight, and,..., create a family..."

Skipper interrupted her: "Stop, don't erode me. I never doubt I can fly back."

Janet said: "I think this is your first time to take part in a flying contest. There must be unexpected dangers afterwards."

Skipper said: "I admit, I like you very much, but it depends on our flying together. As a dove, if I don't compete, it will be a waste of life. Even if I die, I will die on the way home. Follow me home please."

With tears in her eyes, Janet said: "To die together on the way home?"

Skipper said: "Why shall we die? We shall be the first and the second!"

Janet thought for a moment, and then said: "I will follow you."

Skipper said: "Now we take off."

Two doves took off from the bank of a river, discharging like darts.

Chapter 11

Skipper and Janet had flown for 5 days. Skipper guessed that they had flown 2,000km already. Now, Skipper needed perseverance while swinging his wings every time. He was really tired.

This evening, Skipper decided to have a good rest with Janet. He chose the roof of a tall building, and landed.

Skipper and Janet clung to each other, or they might fall to pieces.

Skipper said to Janet: "Let's sleep until it gets bright."

In the past days, they had been flying all the time, even at night. Skipper led Janet to fly in the darkness.

Skipper said: "You sleep first, I will look out."

Janet did not hear this sentence, for she had already fallen asleep.

Skipper looked out. The tiredness attacked him violently and he fell asleep too.

A large wildcat climbed up, smelling something delicious.

The wildcat crawled towards Skipper and Janet. Skipper was in priority because it was nearer to the wildcat.

When that horrific wind blew, Janet woke up. She saw that wildcat which was charging at Skipper. She cried and pushed Skipper off the building. The wildcat caught Janet and seized her neck with fore paws.

Skipper, while dropping, woke up and flew up, seeing Janet who was caught by the wildcat. He understood everything.

Skipper charged at the wildcat. He desperately bit its head and eyes. The wildcat did not expect that there was such a strong dove in the world. After an eye wounded. It loosened Janet, and ran away.

Janet's neck was cut open. She breathed for the last time and said to Skipper: "I love you... You will be the fir...st..." and died then.

Looking at Janet's remains and thinking of her last sentence, Skipper burst into tears, so that all the citizens heard a dove crying aloud throughout the night.

Chapter 12

Skipper began to fly alone for 28 days. His experience during these days could be written out as long as possible. He fought against nature, fought against human, fought against tiredness, and fought against thirst and hunger.

When Skipper discerned from a map on the wall of a local school he stayed in that there was only 300km away from his home, he believed in success.

Skipper needed a good meal to recover and get ready for the final flight. In the moonshine, Skipper landed on the balcony of the 2nd floor of a hotel, as he knew that there were often delicious food and enough water in a hotel.

Skipper looked inside from the balcony: a man was sitting against the window, telephoning. Skipper wouldn't enter if there was anyone in. Just as he flew up to change another room, that man turned round.

Skipper got a shock: Philip!

He checked him carefully and made sure: Philip! The criminal at liberty!

Skipper flew around the hotel and made out the name of it. He entered an empty room and intended to call Stopper.

Skipper moved the receiver away from the telephone, dialing with paws.

Chapter 13

When the telephone rang. Stopper, fast asleep, asked his wife to answer it.

His wife picked up the receiver.

"Speak to Stopper? Who is that? Skipper? Who is Skipper?"

Stopper bounded up suddenly and snatched the receiver from his wife.

"You are still alive! Where are you?"

"I am in Moon City, which is 300km far away from home."

"Fly on! Don't you want to win? How do you know it's 300km from here?"

"I saw Philip!"

"Philip?! Where!"

"He is just in the hotel I'm staying in."

"Tell me the name of the hotel, and his room number at once!"

Skipper described in details.

"Stop flying and trace him! I'll phone the officer now!"

"What shall I do if I can't win? There's 1,000,000 yuan!"

"That's not important! I'll never forgive you if you let him go!"

Stopper hanged up the telephone and called the officer.

He cried to the receiver: "Sir, this is Stopper. I've got the track of Philip!"

"Speaking."

"He is in the Rm. 307 of East Hotel in Moon City."

"How did you know it?"

"I cannot say it clear now. Ask the police in Moon City to catch him! Quick!"

"I'll get you posted if you are joking!"

"Tell them first. And I'll go to the station at once."

Stopper put on his clothes and ran out, when his wife asked: "Who is Skipper? Your step-brother?"

Chapter 14

Skipper dared not to leave the balcony. He supervised every action of Philip, waiting for the police to come.

He saw Philip wiping his pistol with particularly horrific movements. After having wiped his pistol, he began to wipe his bullets. He wiped every bullet clear and bright and then put it into the bullet-box slowly. At last he inserted the bullet-box into his pistol.

Skipper knew that every bullet would probably claim a life. He intended to sneak into his room to steal the bullets. However, when he was thinking about a way of entering, he saw Philip stand up awkwardly.

Philip walked towards the balcony. Skipper quickly hid himself beside the fence. He saw Philip looking downstairs with anxiety.

Philip was a criminal with high IQ. People with high IQ have instinct. Philip felt the coming danger.

Seeing Philip gathering his baggage hurriedly, Skipper found him wanting to escape. He looked downstairs anxiously, failing to see any police cars.

Philip lifted the bag with his left hand, while his right hand put in his pocket. Skipper knew that inside his pocket was a pistol with bullets on. Philip left the room.

Skipper flew to a tall tree outside the gate of the hotel, supervising his direction.

Skipper saw Philip paying the bill at the cash desk. After that, he left the hotel and walked towards the car park. There were many cars in it and Philip walked back and forth. Skipper found him trying to steal a car.

Philip chose a Japanese jeep. He managed to open the door quickly. Skipper flew over the landed on the shelf on the jeep.

Philip was very acute. He felt something moving on the cover. Armed with his pistol, he alit and looked upwards when he found only a dove. He shook his head and got back into the jeep.

The jeep started. Skipper lay on the shelf.

20 minutes after the jeep left, the police car hurried to the hotel from the other direction. The waiter told the police that the person they were looking for had left 25 minutes before.

Philip drove his jeep outside the city. Skipper seized the shelf tightly. The jeep accelerated.

What made Skipper very disappointed was that Philip was driving against the direction to his home, that is to say, it was the road that Skipper spent a lot of energy.

"It would be better if I had a mobile phone, I could manage to tell Stopper Philip's action at any time." Skipper thought, lying on the shelf.

The jeep was running crazily and Skipper was painful about every kilometre.

"I must be the only dove who flies back when approaching home." Skipper thought sadly.

The jeep ran for nearly 2 hours till it was getting bright. Here was a town. Philip drove the jeep into a forest and stopped at a pond.

Skipper flew to a tree and hid himself.

Philip alit. He picked up a stone and threw it into the pond, estimating its depth. Skipper supposed that Philip wanted to push the jeep into the pond so as not to be caught easily.

As it was, after Philip taking his bag off the jeep, he pressed the oil pedal with a stick and started the car.

The jeep went into the pond and sank.

Philip clapped. He picked up his bag and walked out of the forest to the town.

Skipper estimated that it would take him 20 minutes to the town. He must use these 20 minutes to report it to Stopper.

Since it was in the dawn, there weren't many pedestrians in the street. Skipper knew that it was difficult for him to fly into a house and use the telephone. When he saw a man riding bicycle was using a mobile phone 1km away from him, he had to "borrow" his mobile phone.

After he flew around that man, he charged at him and crashed into his face. That man fell off his bicycle suddenly, dropping his mobile phone.

Skipper picked the mobile phone up with his paws, while the man was sitting there with his eyes fixed upon the sky.

Skipper telephoned Stopper on a building.

"Philip is so cunning that he stole a jeep and escaped."

"Where are you?"

"I'm following him near Grand Town. He intends to enter the town. Please tell the local police at once, besides, he has a pistol, you'd better call a commando."

Skipper picked up the mobile phone and flew back to the man who was still sitting there. He put the mobile phone down near him and patted him with wings.

Skipper kept track of Philip in the air. Philip looked up and saw him several times, but he didn't feel a bit suspicious.

Philip entered a toilet and made himself up. Skipper could hardly recognize him when he came out for his appearance had changed a lot.

When Philip went into the town, there were already scores of policemen who were examining the pedestrians, holding Philip's photos.

Philip just passed by the policemen, unrecognized.

Skipper knew that this chance couldn't be missed again. He flew above Philip, shouting in human language loudly: "Stop him! He is Philip!"

The policemen traced the voice, and found a dove shouting at a man.

Philip was amazed. When he found the voice from a dove above him, he took out his pistol and fired at it. The bullet hit Skipper.

Firing was equal to revealing identity. The policemen fired at him.

Skipper struggled to fly to a two-story building. His blood dyed the bricks red.

Skipper saw the whole process of the battle. A policeman was shot by Philip and died instantly. Others shot at Philip from different angles. It was estimated that Philip was shot by at least 200 bullets.

Skipper fainted, smiling.

Chapter 15

When the officer told the policeman that Philip was killed, they cheered.

The officer said to Stopper: "Well done! They told me in the telephone that it was a dove which led them to kill Philip. Some policemen even heard that dove speaking. And it seemed to be killed by Philip."

Stopper fell into his chair, murmuring: "Killed? ..."

His fellow policemen gathered around him and asked: "Is it really your dove?"

Stopper answered, with tears in his eyes: "Of course he is. He is attending the 8,000km race and it was him who twice telephoned me reporting Philip's location."

The policemen looked at each other, puzzled.

The officer kept being curious about Stopper's two accurate reports of Philip's location hundreds of kilometres away. Hearing Stopper admitting and the policemen's description who killed Philip, he felt even more curious. All the colleagues knew that Stopper had sent a dove to the 8,000km race.

The officer passed Stopper a cup of water, saying: "Don't worry! Is it real that your dove told you where Philip was?"

Crying sadly, Stopper answered: "It is real..."

The officer asked: "Can your doves speak human language?"

Stopper said: "Not all of them, but this one."

One colleague said: "Even parrots can speak human language, why can't doves?"

The staff nodded.

The officer asked Stopper again: "Why could he recognize Philip?"

Without Stopper's reply, one colleague answered: "We hang up the photo of that fellow on the wall home everyday, Stopper's dove must have already remembered."

They nodded and comforted Stopper, but it was of no use. No matter how hard they tried, Stopper could not stop crying, but he didn't know, in fact, Skipper was being taken good care of.

Chapter 16

When Skipper woke up, it was already in the afternoon. He tried to move his body but the strong feeling of pain made him scream.

Skipper smelled a scent of medicine and he climbed towards the edge of the roof and looked down. This building was a hospital. Skipper knew that he must be given first aid at once otherwise he would die fairly soon.

Skipper's wings was perfect, but he had absolutely no power to fly. He thought that he could only manage to land on the balcony just below him with his wings and inertia and then try to enter the hospital in order to look for some medicine.

With great pain, Skipper succeeded in gliding down to the balcony. He landed on the windowsill and looked inside, finding himself seen by a person.

It was a young nurse who saw Skipper and she approached the windowsill. Skipper was convinced that she was not afraid of doves.

Skipper had hardly power to leave the windowsill.

The nurse said to Skipper: "What's up with you? Thirsty? Hungry?"

Skipper said to her: "I need your help."

The nurse was so amazed that she drew back to the doorway.

Skipper said: "Don't be afraid. I am only a dove, and I am in trouble. I really need your help."

The nurse paid attention and walked towards him step by step. She observed Skipper carefully, finding his wound and anklet.

"You can speak human language, cannot you?" She asked.

"Have you heard about the 8,000km race held recently?" Skipper said.

"My brother is a dove-feeding fan and I've heard of that." She answered.

Skipper explained how he had got injured.

"It's real that a dove caught a criminal!" The nurse exclaimed, "everyone around me are commenting on this but I don't believe in it. It's so funny."

Skipper said: "Most of the world is incredible. I could hardly bear the pain. Will you save me?"

With the word "certainly", the nurse took Skipper inside the room and bolted the door, as Skipper told her to.

"What is your name?" Skipper asked.

"I'm Lydia, and you?" Said the nurse.

"I'm Skipper."

"Unlike a dove's name." Lydia said.

"Would you take the bullet out?" Said Skipper.

Lydia explained that she was not a surgeon and she asked if she could send for a surgeon. Skipper refused: "No, it will be more dangerous if I am more known. You just take it out yourself, and I could bear it."

Using a pair of tweezers Lydia clumsily took the bullet out.

Lydia put some medicine onto Skipper's wound and bound it.

Suddenly, someone knocked the door. Lydia hid Skipper on a chest and opened the door. A doctor with glasses entered, he asked: "Why do you bolt the door?"

Lydia replied: "Nothing, I changed into another suit."

The doctor said: "I heard there was a man talking with you."

Lydia denied: "None, or you may look for that man."

The doctor looked around and left.

Lydia said to Skipper: "I have to take you home, it's unsafe here."

Skipper agreed. Therefore Lydia asked for a leave and brought him home.

Lydia lived with her parents. On arriving at her house, Skipper found her room rather small but very comfortable.

Lydia treated Skipper like a guest with a plate of soya, which seemed very delicious to him since he began to compete.

That night, Skipper slept so soundly that he could hardly pay any attention to his great pain where wounded.

Early the next morning, Skipper woke up, and Lydia asked him to talk about his experience. He was talking with her when the door opened.

Lydia turned round and asked: "Brother, when did you come back?"

Brother said: "Just now. Where did you get this dove?"

Lydia replied: "A wounded dove, I take care of it."

Brother said: "Let me have a look." He picked Skipper up, looked at him for a moment, and shouted: "God! It's not an ordinary dove!"

Lydia reminded him: "Don't touch it too much, it's wounded."

Brother said to Lydia: "Give it to me, Okay?"

Lydia refused firmly: "No! It is a dove sent to the flying contest. I'll free it!"

Brother shouted: "Are you crazy? You cannot free such a good dove!"

Hearing the quarrel, Lydia's parents came. Brother said to them with Skipper on his hand: "Dad, Mum, this dove is worth at least 50,000 yuan but she wants to free it!"

Mum and Dad both said to Lydia: "Your brother is so fond of it. Give him then."

Lydia took out a pair of scissors and pointed it at herself, shouting: "If you don't return it to me, I'll die here, at once!"

The family looked at her, puzzled.

Brother looked at his parents.

Mum said: "Give her then. What's up with her today?"

Brother begged Lydia: "I kneel for you, or I pay you 10,000 yuan?"

Lydia did not agree. So Dad said to her strictly: "I can't overindulge you like this. You must give it to him!"

Lydia then said: "Then, let me have a look once more."

Brother passed Skipper to Lydia. She agilely turned round, opened the windows, and put Skipper on the windowsill. She then closed the windows and blocked them with her body, shouting at Skipper: "Go, at once!"

Skipper saw Dad knocking Lydia down with a sharp blow, when Brother pulled her and intended to get Skipper back from the windowsill.

Looking at Lydia for the last time, Skipper took off with great pain.

Chapter 17

It was such a difficult flight that Skipper could hardly bear the great pain when swinging his wings every time. His energy was so low to keep a certain height that he flew lower and lower.

Many people in the city saw a dove with gauze flying clumsily over them.

When Skipper at last reached Stopper's house, his height was even less that 50cm. He had to scrape the ground as he couldn't rise to fly into the cage on the 2nd floor. It was Stopper who saw Skipper struggling in front of the building. He rushed downstairs and kneeled, with Skipper on his hands and tears in his eyes.

Skipper reminded him: "Press the clock button... register at the association..."

Skipper was regarded as "Dove King", who is the only dove returning from the 8,000km race.

Stopper won 1,000,000 yuan as he wished to. He gave Sam 500,000 for his great contribution to Human-animal Mixture. He gave the owner of Janet 100,000 for his dove's love and encouragement to Skipper. He gave the policeman sacrificed in Grand Town 100,000 as a pension. He also gave Lydia 100,000 for her save of Skipper. The rest 200,000 was left for his wife and his daughter. As an afterword, Stopper became chairman of International Dove Association after his retirement.

Moon Prison

Chapter 1

Looking at the earth from the appearance, there are many lives.

Looking at the earth from the ribs, there is only one word: quality.

Quality of people, quality of river, quality of life, quality of family, quality of product, quality of friendship, quality of climate, quality of knowledge, quality of health, quality of work...

People who take quality seriously will live, or they may die.

These are a group of people who are considered to be with poor quality. Human beings rack their brains for the way of arranging them. In the dictionary they are called "prisoners".

With the steady increase of the number of the prisoners, people with high quality became more and more anxious. The prisons on the earth were already full, and the number of prison guards had exceeded the number of workers for car manufacturers.

Some experts warned that if the number increased at this speed, the quantity of prisoners would exceed that of non-prisoners within 35 years. It would be hard to say who close who then.

Prisoners that were freed often recommitted crimes that more and more people reentered prisons.

Human beings are wise animals; they extremely use this wisdom to take on their congeners. They could never hold loose to the number of prisoners catching up with the non-prisoners.

After a proposal was put forward by a criminologist called Bruce, the UN entitled this year "The Prisoner Year", so as to solve the problem caused by the increase of prisoners and the disordered management of prisons.

The first activity of the Prisoner Year was to hold a conference at a prison of the city where the UN headquarters settled. The reason of choosing a prison was to give a feeling of eagerness and crisis to the participants.

The participants from various countries brought the exact number of prisoners. According to the computer's calculation, there were altogether 53,432,786 imprisoned prisoners on the earth. The participants thought a lot when they saw the astronomical number, for it had already exceeded the cordon of safety.

Bruce broke the silence first: "I think it is no way out to solve the inflating prisoners only on the earth. I have a suggestion: migration."

"Where to move?" a delegate from a 3rd country asked. They feared that if the developed countries would export prisoners to the 3rd countries just like exporting litter.

"Move all prisoners on the earth to the moon!" Bruce uttered a surprising sentence.

Everyone was silent.

"My idea is, the moon is the neighbor of the earth and it is all the time deserted. Now we can easily go to the moon and depending on our technology, it was no problem to settle the prisoners on the moon. I think the moon is a natural prison given by the god." Bruce expressed his idea.

"Shall we send guards there?" a man asked.

"No." Bruce said.

"What a mess if so!" someone worried.

"It is none of our business! They cannot disturb the normal life on the earth." Bruce seemed obviously deliberate.

"How do they live on the moon?" the delegate of the International Humanism Organization asked.

"We'll give them a month's food and water before moving them." Bruce said.

"What about after a month?" the delegate asked.

"I think they will have a way to live. No one is willing to wait for death."

"We should give them two months' food." The delegate took pity on them.

After a ballot, all participants agreed to move the prisoners to the moon. They applied this proposal to the UNSC for permission.

The UNSC certainly approved the proposal with full vote. Swedish Royal Academy even nominated Bruce as the candidate of the Nobel Prize for peace. However, Bruce understood that one could not be too popular, thus he firmly refused.

Sending 50 million prisoners to the moon was a colossal project needing cooperating of the human beings. 10 aviation bases scattered all over the world took the mission and the armies of every country were sending its civil prisoners to the nearest aviation base under escort.

The prisoners acted differently when they got to know their destiny. Some were pessimistic and some were optimistic, while some were even indifferent to it. The pessimistic ones felt it ominous to live on the moon; the optimistic ones cheered for a chance of taking spacecraft; the indifferent ones had already lost their hopes of life.

The human beings, before sending the prisoners, took great pity on them, for they prepared a sumptuous meal to treat them as if treating prisoners to be executed.

Some of the prisoners were unwilling to go to the moon that they rebelled. The guards and the army suppressed them.

Prisoners from all over the world were sent to aviation bases under escort in trucks, trains or ships. Everyone was armed with 2 months' food.

They disobeyed humanity so that they were eliminated out of homestead by their congeners.

Spaceships in different bases launched one after one. Going through between the earth and the moon, they took the responsibility of purifying the earth. Chapter 2

Hoffman was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment for committing crimes with computer. He was 45 years old, strong and intelligent, and he was from the USA.

This afternoon, Hoffman felt something anomalous in the prison. He found some armies joined the guards and the policemen were smiling.

"Something would happen." Hoffman said to his companion.

"What would happen?" the companion lived together with Hoffman for a total of 3 years that he adore Hoffman's intelligence a lot. He often said that if Hoffman had been born 100 years earlier, Einstein would have no chance.

"Judging from the policemen's expressions, it seems that they will kill all of us." Hoffman said.

"Dare they?" the companion cried.

"Of course not. However, it's really strange that even armies have arrived." Hoffman frowned.

"Whatever would take place?" the companion felt a bit worried.

Hoffman shook his head gently.

"Chirp..." a screaming sound from whistle vociferated horribly.

"Assemble! Come to the courtyard to assemble! Quick!" a policeman shouted while blowing the whistle.

The guard opened the doors of the prison cells.

The prisoners walked lamely out of the prison cells, speaking rude remarks.

The courtyard was a place for gathering of prisoners. They stood in lines.

Hoffman noticed that the defence towers were occupied by soldiers armed with automatic weapons.

"Now the gaoler speak." The vice-gaoler said.

The gaoler walked up to a concrete platform in the front of the courtyard, which is decorated with aflutter star-stripe flag.

"I announce a decision made by the human beings." The gaoler said.

A decision made by the human beings? The prisoners murmured.

"Silent!" the vice-gaoler cried.

The gaoler looked through all the prisoners with a strict eye, and said: "The human beings decided, as you are unqualified to live on the earth, to move you to the moon. The migration will start tomorrow."

The prisoners broke into turmoil.

"What? Go to the moon? How do we live?"

"It is inferior to killing us directly!"

"Who suggested it? Fuck him!"

"We won't go!"

"..."

"..."

The gaoler took out his pistol and shot at the sky.

"You must obey this decision, for you have no authority to choose! The International Humanism Organization supported this decision! I tell you, all the armies in the world are now serving for you. If anyone acts frivolously, he would be treated by armies, not police!"

The prisoners calmed down.

"Before leaving the earth, we give every of you 2 months' of food." The gaoler said.

"What about after 2 months?" Hoffman asked.

"God bless you." The gaoler said, "Tonight we will hold a banquet for your leave. You can order anything you like."

The queue of prisoners was horribly silent.

After returning to the prison cells, the policemen registered the prisoners' supper with a clipboard, one room after another.

Hoffman's companion had no appetite.

Hoffman frankly reported what he liked to eat: "A roast lobster, a snail cookie, a steak 30% ripe, half a Chinese barbecue duck, a ham salad, lettuce soup, Italian pie, a Scottish whisky, a box of ice, a bowl of Belgian beef noodles with fin."

The policeman wrote those down while swallowing saliva.

"You should eat, otherwise you will regret after arriving at the moon." Hoffman urged his companion.

The companion got to be in great panic after knowing of the migration, disturbed by a feeling of execution.

"I order for you." Hoffman ordered some courses for his companion, "Chinese fish soup, German beer, Denish roast pork, Japanese sushi.

In the evening, the prisoners gulped in the restaurant of the prison. While eating, some were laughing but some were crying.

The next day, they would be moved to the moon from Kennedy Aviation Base.

Right the night, 7 prisoners committed suicide in the prison and 9 prisoners attempted to escape, killed by armies.

Hoffman slept soundly, undisturbed by the sound of firing. Chapter 3

Spaceships ran back and forth between the earth and the moon, sending the prisoners from the earth to the moon.

The prisoners first felt bewildered facing desolate moon. However, they became brave with the daily increase of population.

When the last spaceship left, the moon was occupied by 50 million prisoners.

Having 2 months' food, everyone had the same opportunity to live.

Strong prisoners began to rob weak ones, even killed them at some places.

Law of the jungle redisplayed on the moon.

Hoffman, Cai and Karen stopped the replays of the law. The moon prison offered them a chance of writing a whole new history.

Cai was a Chinese prisoner, sentenced to 6 years' imprisonment for his piracy of copyright. He had instinctive organizing ability, not depending on his power but his smile, for his smile was extremely appealing.

Karen was a New Zealand prisoner, female, black, beautiful and 32 years old. 3 years ago, Karen killed her husband at a moonless night, not withstanding her husband's ill treatment. She was sentenced to 13 years' imprisonment when she pleaded guilty at court. Karen liked reading. She preferred philosophy especially "Birth of Tragedy" written by Niche, for the book was the only thing with her in prison. She always read with sigh when reading it.

When the prisoners began to kill each other on the moon, Hoffman, Cai and Karen met miraculously.

"Come to my tent." Karen invited Hoffman and Cai.

Karen's tent was methodical that Hoffman and Cai found her an orderly person.

"I thought we can live for 2 months, but as what is happening, we may live for at most 2 weeks." Karen said to Hoffman and Cai.

The tent was surrounded by screaming sounds and cursing voices.

"We can manage to stop the slaughter. But we cannot give any idea when food is running out. The fellow who put forward the suggestion of migration should be prosecuted." Hoffman complained.

"I suppose he should be awarded." Cai said.

Hoffman and Karen were surprised.

"For our prisoners, lost freedom, this is an excellent and the unique chance to develop our skills. We can rewrite the whole progress of civilization on the moon." Cai said.

Hoffman and Karen understood.

"We are not silly at all." Karen said delightedly.

"We even have the same intelligence as those scientists and entrepreneurs, we did only ran to an wrong way." Hoffman said.

"In China there is an idiom: A train ran fast for the lead of the loco. We three lead them to create a civilization!" Cai said.

"First we must persuade them. We work separately: I'll be in charge of white prisoners and those from developed countries; Cai will be in charge of xanthous ones and those from developing countries; Karen will be in charge of Negroes and female ones." Hoffman said.

Karen and Cai agreed.

"This is an unprecedented chance that the name of our three will be recorded in the history of the moon." Cai reminded his colleagues to pay full concentration.

"I know." Karen nodded.

On the moon without any medium or loudspeaker, was it easy that 3 people persuade 50 million? Chapter 4

Hoffman, Cai and Karen knew clearly about their disadvantage, but they knew more clearly about their advantage, which was, no one was willing to die.

Hoffman, Cai and Karen told all the prisoners by telling one to another that they had something to say.

Uneasy prisoners paid no attention to these three companions, for they used dirty words to laugh at them.

Someone suggested that every of them say one sentence. Others agreed.

The most peculiar conference in the history began. Hoffman, Karen and Cai stood in the center, surrounded by 50 million participants. One out of every 20 was to spread statements around, like the spreading waves.

Hoffman said first: "All bad, no bad! In fact, everyone has a good face and a bad one. We showed our bad faces on the earth, and, shall we now show our good faces in order to live on?"

Lumpy applause.

Cai said: "Use our bare hand to build the moon another earth! It is equal to the ape recreating another history! Our advantage is experience, and we are all wise!"

Mightier applause.

Karen said: "Sisters, don't miss the chance! Girls would never be bullied by boys with money!"

Even male prisoners applauded.

They finished saying and waited for the public adjudication.

"Speak on!" 50 million prisoners shouted with one voice.

Strong symphony resonance had nearly driven the moon off its orbit.

Cai said: "We'll build up the achievement which the human beings have taken 5,000 years to build up in 5 years. Are you confident about that?"

The crowd replied yes.

Karen said: "If you trust us, please follow to our instructions from now on."

The crowd replied yes too.

Hoffman began to command: "First we make a law. Everyone must obey it. Then we create the police to defend the law. Those who used to be policemen, stand out."

There were quite a few policemen among the prisoners.

Hoffman said to the first group of moon: "Never to disobey the law again. You are in charge of our development of career on the moon!"

The policemen swore firmly.

Cai said: "We must solve the food problem first of all. Those who know about agriculture, stand out."

There were even more peasants among the prisoners.

Karen said: "Our compatriots gave each of us 20 seeds when throwing us here, now let's assemble all the seeds together."

Hoffman said: "Hand in your food, too."

The crowd burst into turmoil.

Cai said: "We must be of one mind! No one can have disloyalty!"

The crowd began to hand in their food.

Hoffman, Cai and Karen then sorted out the prisoners by different specialties. Steel-makers, financiers, car-producers, plane-makers, managers, computer engineers, doctors, writers, directors, actors, reporters, transporters, architects, teachers, tax collectors, officials, weavers, designers, turners...

There were all kinds of people amongst the prisoners.

"In the different groups of people, only the prisoners are with uncovered talent." Cai said with great delight.

50 million prisoners were of different occupations. For example, there were TV journalists, radio ones, newspaper ones, magazine ones, agency ones, photographers and so on.

The moon, having been desolate for billions of years, was now full of vitality. Chapter 5

Motivated by the desire of life, 50 million prisoners worked desperately to build a living environment under the leading of Hoffman, Cai and Karen.

They struggled with their good faces. As they knew clearly about human beings' past faults, they tried their best to avoid making similar mistakes while constructing the moon. Thus they didn't meet any frustrations or failures.

The miracle appeared. They spent only 4 years building the moon a star with high technology and high civilization, whose level was much higher than the earth. They call themselves "Lunar Inhabitants".

It was easy to judge Lunar Inhabitants' thoughtfulness by their law of marriage. Lunar Inhabitants' law of marriage prescribed that marriage was timed. The couples could either stop or continue the marriage by the end time. However, if the couples had a child, it would be illegal for them to stop the marriage before the child's 18th birthday.

On the moon, skyscrapers scattered here and there; highways and subways crossed each other; cars, trains and planes constituted cubic traffic methodically.

The grandest buildings on the moon were schools and the most important curriculum at school was law.

Finally, the marketplace of the moon was saturated. Their productions overstocked, including cars, planes, grains, textiles, appliances, computers, and building materials...

In recent days, Hoffman, Cai and Karen were anxious. Overstock meant collapse to enterprises, collapse to enterprises meant job losses, job losses meant social unstability, and at last, social unstability would lead to severe consequences.

Cai telephoned Hoffman and Karen to go to his house for a discussion.

Hoffman and Karen drove intellectualized cars to Cai's villa. Cai, Karen and Hoffman were living in the worst buildings on the moon, driving the worst vehicles and private helicopters. 50 million Lunar Inhabitants admired these three leaders extremely.

The discussion began.

"We must look for new marketplace, otherwise the moon has no way out." Cai said.

"Stock market falls these days." Karen replied worriedly.

"Where can we expand our marketplace?" Hoffman asked himself.

Silence.

"Earth!" they said in one voice.

Silence again.

Someplace overdeveloped because of high-tech, and led to the saturation of their marketplace and the overstock of their productions. Then they began to occupy the marketplace of undeveloped regions by their advantage at technology and quality. This was a typical way of aggression in the 21st century.

"Do it, survival of the fittest." Hoffman said.

"Their moving prisoners to the moon is a fatal error." Cai said.

"They even want to award Bruce the Nobel Prize of peace!" Karen said.

"Doing stupid things, for the human beings, is a way of sustaining balance." Hoffman said.

They made a decision to expand their marketplace on the earth.

They also decided to try their best to use good-mannered way. Chapter 6

Arrogant earth people were completely unaware of the changes of the moon. Most of them considered that the moon had become the grave of the prisoners. Some of them even forgot the migration.

Recently, some incredible accidents happened to the international economic domain attracted much attention of the earth people.

Firstly an international bank with 123 years' history collapsed inconceivably. Look at it from the appearance, it was caused by cheating. However, experts didn't think so. They thought that a kind of strong force from outside destroyed the bank.

Soon afterwards, 17 large banks collapsed following that bank. The international money market fell into a terrible mess. The foreign exchange markets and the stock markets both went abnormal like a drunken person.

Enterprises were fleshes while finance was blood. Blood went bad and fleshes could no longer subsist. Famous international enterprises collapsed one after one. Car- producing first, and then computer engineering, and then appliance producing, and then food manufacturers...

The board chairman of the most famous car-producing corporation in the world cried when his enterprise collapsed, and the managing director fell sick.

The Internet Expressway was invaded by an unknown virus overnight. The virus blocked the expressway as if nothing could found and clear it. A lot of important data was lost and a great deal of valuable information came to naught.

When the earth people had no way out, various kinds of productions with FANRENTM came, including cars, computers, appliances, foods and building materials...

The earth people had never seen such advanced productions, had never seen such high-quality productions, and had never seen such cheap productions.

FANRENTM became really a world-famous brand and an integrated brand, for it had included all kinds of productions, large as jets, small as needles.

The civil industry of the earth fell in unprecedented danger and soon died out.

A Chinese boy first discovered that FANREN was the Chinese word spelling for "prisoner". FANRENTM was the masterpiece of Cai.

The medium was in an uproar.

Some imaginative people occurred the moon prison.

USA Aviation Bureau immediately got down to observing the moon. The real surface of the moon was discovered.

The UN Secretary-general was greatly irritated when a scientist gave him a report entitled "Earth Is Becoming the Colony of Moon".

"Damn it!" the secretary-general slammed the desk, "A group of prisoners is not honorary even on the moon and they continue to commit crimes!"

"Their technology is much higher than the earth, for FANRENTM is their production." The scientist told the secretary-general.

"It's unbelievable!" said the secretary-general, driving an extra luxurious car with FANRENTM.

"It's truly unbelievable. They have spent 4 years developing the same civilization as we've done in 5,000 years, using almost bare hands." Claimed the scientist.

"Mixed good and bad is welfare while separated is calamity." Sociologists said.

"The circumstance of earth is very dangerous! We must make a decision as early as possible." Said US president, who had come together.

The secretary-general decided to hold an emergent UNSC conference.

The first decision of the conference was to execute Bruce.

The second decision was to resist the economic aggression from the moon, by forbidding the earth people from buying FANRENTM productions, so as to protect and develop the civil industry of the earth.

However, it was of no use, the consumers went on buying cheap and fine FANRENTM productions.

No way out, the UNSC decided to fight against Lunar Inhabitants.

The first interstellar nuclear missile roared towards to the moon.

Hoffman pressed the anti-missile button lightly, and the interstellar missile turned around and burst in New York.

New York was devastated.

The earth people were irritated. They decided to fight against Lunar Inhabitants to death, in order to defend the honor and the marketplace of virtuous people.

Star wars would soon unveil. Translated on 31/01/00

The Dream of Gold
Chapter 1Chapter 2Chapter 3Chapter 4Chapter 5Chapter 6

Chapter 1

At exactly 24 o'clock of Greenwich time on a moonless night, two mysterious spaceships were launched simultaneously in two different places of the earth. Going through the atmosphere at the speed of 7.9 kps like darts, they accelerated to 11.2 kps and got rid of the attraction of the earth and the solar system. Then they headed for Cancer 5 times as fast as the velocity of light...

Their mission, direction and destination were still known by very few people in the world.

Chapter 2

A week ago, the scientists of country S found that in Cancer, which is 175 light-years away from the earth, there was a star called Whiteblue. The amount of gold in this star was so large that it took 1/100,000 of its weight and it was 100 times as much as the amount of this metal in the solar system. Of course, the discovery thrilled country S greatly. As we all know, the amount of gold in the earth takes only 1/200,000,000 of its weight and it concentrates in limited areas. On contrast, the gold in Whiteblue scattered inside it equally. The total amount was 100 billion tons.

Country S confirmed this discovery as top secret immediately, and organized the "Gold Discoverer" led by a glorious astronaut, Saharov. The mission of it was to land on Whiteblue, make sure of its reality, and fetch back a certain amount of gold in order to solve the internal economic problem.

"Gold Discoverers" had altogether 23 people, which were not only experienced astronauts, but also specialists in different aspects, such as astronomers, geologists, metallurgists and so on. Its leader, Saharov, who was 28 years old, was very tall and powerful, for his face looked cunning and he seldom smiled.

Country S did not occur that at the moment they launched their spaceship, Abundance, country M also launched their spaceship, Promishes. For, country M nearly discovered this shining gold star together with country S in the same second. And president of country M was definitely made dazzled by this discovery. It seemed that in spite of the language, the word "Gold" had extreme fascination. Whenever you spelt these four letters together, you would feel comfortable. So that country M organized the "Gold Explorers" led by Nick, with the same aim as country S's "Gold Discoverers", and left the earth in Promishes in the same time.

In fact, the amount of gold in Whiteblue was 100 billion tons that it was absolutely sufficient for country S to share with country M. However, monopoly seemed as if instinctive. Therefore a breathtaking war unveiled.

Chapter 3

Abundance was flying steadily in space. Saharov received the command from the earth informing him to arrive in Cancer before Promishes, and find a chance to destroy it.

As it was, Saharov found Promishes flying not far away from them. He frowned.

The captain of Promishes, Nick, was only 26 years old. He was handsome and had a very good sense of humour. But his tactics were as many as his jokes, no less than experienced Saharov. Nick received the command from the earth as well, whose contents were exactly the same except the country names.

"Hello, Promishes! This is Abundance greeting." Saharov's amiable voice was heard in the controlling compartment of Promishes.

"Hello, Abundance! Have a nice trip!" Nick replied politely. The two captains met each other on the screen, smiling like friends.

"Please approach us," Saharov invited friendly, "we can connect to each other and cooperate to cover the mission."

"Affirmative," Nick winked, "we are acquaintances now. See, we have already passed Uranus. In this vast universe, we are in the same family, aren't we?"

Thus, the two spaceships decided to connect together, like kinfolk.

Hanging up the visual telephone, Saharov prepared laser cannon, for if Promishes approached, it would be destroyed immediately.

Nick ordered his spaceship to approach Abundance, keeping joking with Saharov.

When Promishes had just approached Abundance (in fact the distance was 3 km, but it was tiny in the universe), Saharov made a gesture expressing firing. Abundance shot a slim beam of laser. Meanwhile, Promishes fired a beam of laser too. The two beams came across each other, and no one knew what physical phenomenon occurred (for the physicists to research). As a result, neither of them was destroyed.

Chapter 4

The connection succeeded, as nothing happened. Saharov embraced Nick lovingly and kissed him. It was really a moving spectacle. They signed a protocol that they would develop Whiteblue together, cooperating and sharing.

As the population on both Abundance and Promishes was the same, neither of them dared to fight against the other.

On Abundance, Saharov held a banquet inviting the guests from country M. On the spaceship at 5 times of the velocity of light, there was no problem of zero gravity, so that toothpaste-like compressed food was unnecessary. They enjoyed the banquet, as if on the earth.

Saharov adulterated anesthetics into the wine for the crew of Promishes. Seeing for himself that all the guests from country M drank the wine, Saharov smiled, like all the hosts do when seeing the guests drinking.

When the crew of Promishes returned to their own spaceship, they all felt overturned. Nick realized all what happened, but he still fell down.

But Saharov didn't come in to prosecute them, for Nick shot some anesthetics into the bodies of the crew of Abundance with a mini injector. Therefore both of them were fast asleep.

They slept soundly, but it caused great trouble to the earth. The surface station of country S called 1,000 times with no reply. They protested to the embassy of country M and declared all the 23 astronauts as martyrs, announcing their relatives to hold a funeral. Country M didn't lag behind, for they called 1,001 times with no reply, they set the national flag to the semi-height first, and interviewed the ambassador from country S, using extremely intensive expressions that rarely appeared in its diplomatic history.

The astronauts from two countries were still sleeping, unaware of the earth logging out their identities. Now who woke up earlier, who would be the winner.

Eventually, Saharov opened his eyes. He quickly awoke his companions, prepared a gun, and walked towards Promishes quietly.

If they had not been quite different in appearance, Saharov would have thought of a big mirror forward, for he saw Nick walking towards him, armed with also a gun and followed by his companions.

The two crews hid their guns simultaneously, shaking hands and greeting each other warmly. Even the people in love could not reach this extent.

Chapter 5

After two contests, neither of them dared to appeal to arms. They lived together.

After 25 years' flight, the two spaceships were about to approach Whiteblue. For security, they decided to break apart and land. The scene of breaking was also moving.

Before the break, Saharov signed another protocol with Nick, dividing their areas on Whiteblue: the east hemisphere for country S and the west hemisphere for country M.

The two spaceships approached Whiteblue. Golden Whiteblue was shining attractively like a large gold ball. Presidents of both countries saw the golden star through the television. Although during the 25 years, presidents changed many times, the desire for gold remained. On contrast, with the increasing of the price of gold, this kind of desire increased day after day.

"You must monopolize Whiteblue!" President of country S commanded Saharov.

"You have to get all the 100 billion tons!" President of country M ordered Nick.

Nick was too excited that his eyes were filled with blood. He commanded his spaceship to make for Whiteblue at full speed.

But Saharov didn't hurry, for he watched Promishes sympathetically, as he put a special kind of germs that could duplicate themselves quickly and erode the metal into the landing system of Promishes 15 years ago. According to his accurate calculation, the germs would erode the landing system of Promishes today and make it unable to land safely.

As soon as Abundance touched down safely on Whiteblue, a loud noise was heard far away -- Promishes crashed. The astronauts of country S burst into cheers that their national flag rose uniquely on the gold land of Whiteblue.

Chapter 6

For the gold scattered everywhere, exploiting was unnecessary. Saharov would like to haul the whole star back to the earth, but of course, this was only a daydream. He was a realist that he and his companions gathered 2 tons of gold (they couldn't calculate it in ounces), filled the cabin of Abundance fully, and went on the returning trip victoriously.

The happiness of country S and the sadness of country M made a sharp contrast, the same in degree, but just opposite.

Another 25 years passed. Passing by Mars, Abundance approached the earth. All people of country S, old and young, celebrated as if it was a festival. The landing field was packed with people and there were even concerts being held. Although president changed many times again, the desire of gold still remained anxious. For today, all the MPs arrived at the scene to share the happiness.

The most exciting moment came. The spaceship, Abundance, appeared above the landing field. In everyone's eyes, it was not a spaceship, but gold and money! It's everything! The music band was playing the national song loudly. A large number of people were wiping their tears from the eyes with handkerchiefs.

Abundance descended lower and lower, 300 m, 200 m, 150 m, 100 m...... landed! At the moment it touched down, a horrible sound shook the land and the mighty wave destroyed anything 100 km away. Abundance exploded.

As a reason, Nick installed a mini timely-bomb into the controlling compartment of Abundance before breaking apart from it. The timer was set to be today, after 25 years. This bomb was so powerful that it was made of anti-substance, much stronger than nuclear power. Of course, all the gold loaded on board came to naught.

Naturally, everyone on location died, together with Abundance and the gold. However, new government of country S was reconstructed 6 hours later. Its first policy was to fling a spaceship to Cancer.

So did country M, whose new spaceship was ready to launch.

只能看懂篇名,但总觉得中国的东西,翻译出去没那种感觉。

老郑说文章里每一个字都应该是恰如其分不可替代的,这下子连语言都换了,能保证原汁原味?
